Acquisition of Ascend Media’s Event Media and Custom Publishing Division
August 2009 – Kansas City, MO – TGP Investments, LLC, the manager of private equity investment fund, TGP Capital Partners LLC, is pleased to announce that the fund has acquired the Event and Custom Media Division of Ascend Media. The transaction was completed in partnership with Cameron Bishop who will also serve as the company’s CEO.
Ascend Media and the acquired Event Media and Custom Publishing Division are headquartered in Overland Park, KS. The acquired business and all employees of the division will continue to operate under the Ascend Media name and from its offices at 7015 College Blvd.
In conjunction with the acquisition, TGP and Bishop announce that Barbara Kay, Division President of the Division has been promoted to company president. According to Bishop, “Barbara is an incredible manager and an instrumental part of the company. She has earned tremendous respect among her team and clients as she has transitioned the business from an old school print only media company to a multi‐faceted integrated media business that addresses clients’ communications and marketing needs in print and through a sophisticated portfolio of electronic media.”
Eric Graham, TGP Managing Director, stated that “first and foremost, we have developed a strong relationship with Cam in recent years and we are thrilled to finally have the opportunity to partner with him on this acquisition. With Cam, Barbara and the rest of the team at Ascend Media, I feel highly confident in saying that we have one of the most experienced teams in the business. Beyond that, TGP was attracted to the business as an investment because of its compelling suite of media services and communications solutions for its clients. In researching both the company and communications trends today, it became immediately apparent that this business is both unique in its ability to serve clients and is on the cutting edge relative to the broad range of print and electronic products that the company can create and manage for its clients.”
Bishop, who rejoins the company as both an investor and CEO, stated that “it’s a strong business today with tremendous upside potential. The portfolio of clients includes such prestigious trade associations as The American Heart Association, American Sport Fishing Association and Kansas City‐based American Academy of Family Physicians; corporate clients like McDonalds, Ace Hardware and the World Market Center Las Vegas; and event‐specific clients like The Baseball Hall of Fame. The majority of key clients have been with the company for more than 10 years and the company executes well over 400 projects a year.”
Also according to Kay, “these clients, and companies in general today, have a compelling need to broaden the use of communication media they use to reach customers and constituents and to fully utilize the growing reliance on social networking tools to build business. Our company offers fully integrated solutions ranging from newspapers, directories and guides to custom magazines and newsletters along with electronic products that extend all print publications digitally, as well as encompassing dedicated web sites, web casts, pod casts, enewsletters, Twitter management and hand held device applications. We have the talented team necessary to design and create content in all media. Perhaps even more so today, we have the talent to continue to manage content streams as companies are finding that online communications tools require constant attention. Electronic products are increasingly labor intensive and require skilled teams to manage them. Our Event Media and Custom Publishing Division can offer content creation and management services as well as advertising and sponsorship sales on a turnkey basis.”
About Ascend Media’s Event Media and Custom Publishing Division
The business was founded in 2002 by three partners including Cameron Bishop, Dan Altman and Ron Wall, business‐to‐business industry veterans who built Ascend Media into a $120 million company. Their founding acquisition at that time was the former Overland Park‐based Atwood Convention Publishing which they evolved into what is today’s Event Media and Custom Publishing Division. Over the course of time, the three founding partners transitioned out of the company for other opportunities.
